In the past week alone over 5,000 éirígí anti-home tax newsletters have been delivered across Dublin 8, whilst hundreds of posters with the same message have been erected. Door to door canvassing has met with overwhelming support. And hard-pressed residents from across the South West Inner City have been energised by the massive turnout at the rally held on March 24 in the nearby National Stadium. Over the last six months éirígí activists have worked within the Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes, delivering leaflets, canvassing door to door and organising public meetings. In addition to encouraging a boycott by homeowners who are currently required to pay the home tax, activists have also encouraged social housing tenants to get on board with the CAHWT. If the history of waivers for bin taxes is anything to go by it won’t be long before social housing tenants and homeowners alike will also be liable for new home taxes. Speaking at the site of the execution of Robert Emmet on Thomas Street éirígí’s Damien Farrell called upon the people of the south west inner city to join the march on the Fine Gael Ard Fheis on March 31. Damien said, “The home tax will ultimately affect everyone in this state. While the thousands of people who live in social housing in our area are being granted a waiver I don’t believe that they will escape the home tax for long. By separating tenant from homeowner the state is trying to divide and conquer. If the state can implement this tax upon homeowners first I am certain that social housing tenants will soon find their waiver disappearing or their rent dramatically increasing. Anyone who currently has a waiver or an exemption should still get involved in fighting the home tax and the rest of the austerity measures now, before it‘s too late. “I am calling on the people of the south west inner city to continue to support the campaign of non-registration and non-payment and assemble on March 31 at 1pm at the Garden of Remembrance to show their opposition to this unfair tax. From there we will march on the Fine Gael Ard Fheis in the National Conference Centre.”
