Campaign for British Withdrawal Reaches South Derry

éirígí’s recently inaugurated Campaign for a British Withdrawal reached south Derry in the past week.

Activists provided local people with information on the contemporary nature of the British occupation of the Six Counties, which includes the indefinite presence of 5,000 British troops.

Speaking in Maghera on Friday evening (August 24), éirígí’s mid-Ulster spokesperson Geraldine Dougan expressed encouragement at the response they had received.

“The distribution of this new information leaflet highlighting the continuing aggressive nature of British imperialism in Ireland and calling for a British withdrawal from the Six Counties is only the first phase of the campaign.

“The ending of ‘Operation Banner’ on July 31 this year made headline news. However, the commencement on August 1 of the British army’s ‘Operation Helvetic’, which allows Britain’s military garrison to reinforce the RUC/PSNI at a moment’s notice, received much less attention.”

Geraldine continued: “The leaflet has been well received in the areas we have covered to date, with many commenting on the fact that, as we distributed the leaflets, a British army helicopter flew incessantly overhead.  I have no doubt that the campaign will continue to be well received in this area and indeed throughout the country.

“éirígí wants to see an ending of British rule in Ireland and I call on all republicans to refocus their efforts on building popular resistance to the British occupation and to join us in this campaign.”
