Cuban NAM
Presidency to Foster Unity
29/08/06
Havana,
Aug 29 (Prensa Latina) Cuba will assume the presidency of the Non-Aligned
Countries Movement (NAM) by reenergizing traditional endeavours to
strengthen the unity of Third World nations and the fight for peace.
Twenty-three years after Cuba first occupied the NAM presidency (1979 to
1983), Havana returns to the position at a special time for the world,
currently gripped by a superpower that does not act in accord with
international law.
NAM s original serious challenges were also mainly posed by aggressive US
policy. Fidel Castro, in his condition as president of NAM, condemned
Israel, which invaded southern Lebanon and attacked Syria with the backing
of the United States.
At the UN, the Cuban president called for solidarity with the Palestinian
and Lebanese peoples, spoke about the reality of Israeli massacres in Sabra
and Shatila, and strongly condemned US arms supplies so that Tel Aviv could
launch those aggressions.
