25/04/09 Ninety-three years ago yesterday, on Easter Monday, April 24th 1916, the long-awaited armed rebellion against British rule in Ireland began. As the combined forces of the Irish Citizen Army, the Irish Republican Brotherhood and other smaller revolutionary organisations moved into place across the country an Irish Republic was declared and a Provisional Government established. The epicentre of the Rising was in Dublin where hundreds of volunteers from the newly-formed Army of the Irish Republic took control of the city’s streets.
Although the Rising itself was defeated within a week the flame that it ignited was to become an inferno of resistance to the British occupation. Within three years the people of Ireland overwhelmingly backed the cause of Irish freedom and independence in the historic 1918 elections.
To this day the actions of those who took part in the 1916 Rising inspire new generations of Irish people to resist not only British rule but also exploitation in all of its forms.
To mark yesterday’s anniversary éirígí activists from across Dublin paid tribute to those who went before them. Various banners and posters were erected across the city calling on people to both remember the Rising and to continue the struggle against modern-day imperialism and exploitation. In Finglas, Ballymun, Clondalkin, Tallaght, Sallynoggin, Inchicore and elsewhere the message was clear – the spirit of 1916 is alive and well in the capital city.
