23/08/12 éirígí’s Tallaght representative Scott Masterson has condemned those who recently painted racist graffiti on the perimeter wall of Tallaght Stadium. He has also commended the swift action of the éirígí activists who today removed it. The offensive graffiti, which included crudely-painted swastikas and other far-right slogans, had appeared on the wall of the home ground of Shamrock Rovers Football Club in recent days. The targeting of Shamrock Rovers ground by neo-Nazis has caused outrage amongst Rovers fans and Tallaght residents alike.
Speaking from Tallaght, Scott Masterson said, “The right-wing graffiti which appeared on Tallaght Stadium in the last couple of days has caused outrage in the local community. Those behind the graffiti are completely out of touch with the community here in Tallaght and wider Irish society. They should hang their heads in shame. “Tallaght is a proud working class community made up of people of many cultures, colours and nationalities. Everybody has a right to live their lives free from the fear of harassment or intimidation because of their nationality, colour or religious belief.”
Masterson continued, “Irish socialist republicanism has a proud history of combating racism and right-wing extremism, be that against the Blueshirts in the 1930s or against the wannabe neo-Nazis of today. éirígí is committed to directly challenging and combating right-wing extremism across Ireland. “Everyone in this country has a responsibility to directly challenge the hate-politics of the far-right in all of its forms. I would encourage anyone who notices right-wing graffiti in the Tallaght area to remove it themselves, or failing that to contact éirígí so that we can ensure that it is removed.”
