22/05/09 The Open Session of éirígí’s Ard-Fheis has always been an important element of the proceedings for the party. It offers an opportunity for other republicans and socialists to inform, debate and listen about issues that concern citizens across Ireland. This year, Brian Leeson was joined on the platform by Shell to Sea activist and Mayo resident Maura Harrington and independent republican councillor for Fermanagh Bernice Swift. Maura, who, within days, was to again be imprisoned by the Twenty-Six County state, gave a run-down on the ongoing struggle for Ireland’s natural resources in west Mayo. Bernice, meanwhile, talked about the continuing British occupation in the Six Counties and the right of republicans to organise opposition to it. Brian presented éirígí’s analysis of the current crisis in capitalism and inability of the establishment parties to present a viable alternative.
