18/06/08 On June 16 US President George Bush and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown visited Belfast as ‘Men of Peace’. Anti-war activists gathered in Belfast city centre and at Stormont Buildings to expose them as war criminals. éirígí activists supported the demonstration and engaged in a number of initiatives to oppose the visit and the ongoing occupation of Iraq, Afghanistan and Ireland. Included were banner drops at major traffic junctions throughout Belfast City, the shutting down of the US Consulate in Belfast, and the erection of the Iraqi flag and éirígí banner from Belfast City Hall in solidarity with the Iraqi people and the crowds of activists gathered at the anti-war rally in the streets below.
