Welcoming the growing level of éirígí activism in the county, Cathaoirleach éirígí Brian Leeson said, “There has been a notable and welcome increase in éirígí activity in Kildare since the beginning of the year. Hundreds of stickers and posters have been erected and thousands of pieces of literature spreading the socialist republican message have reached the homes of Kildare people.” Leeson continued by recalling Kildare’s republican history. “Kildare is a county with a strong republican tradition. Home of the great United Irishman Lord Edward Fitzgerald the county was central to the 1798 rebellion. Later, thousands of Kildare’s finest were prepared to participate in Emmet’s rising in 1803. “The county produced many volunteers in the 1916-1921 period, and in 1922 and 1923 the Kildare battalion of the IRA was to the fore in taking on the might of the counter-revolutionary forces of the Free State. When the civil rights movement was suppressed in the late 1960s, Kildare was again not found wanting, with many of her sons and daughters playing their part in the uprising against British rule that followed.”
“I want to take the opportunity to encourage people from across Kildare to join with us and build a movement that cannot be bought off, silenced or defeated. Whether you are young or old, male or female, a veteran of political activism or new to struggle is irrelevant, in the words of Bobby Sands, everyone has their part to play. Whatever you can contribute is welcome. Please get in touch with us today.” If you are interested in joining éirígí, or éirígí’s official supporters’ organisation Clann éirígí, click here.
