10/08/11 Last Saturday [August 6], éirígí Corcaigh joined with the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign in a demonstration throughout the city centre aimed at highlighting the plight of the Palestinian people. The loud and colourful protest undertook a tour of a number of city centre locations, with IPSC spokesperson Jim Bowen urging Cork shoppers to boycott Israeli goods in solidarity with the people of the West Bank and those in Gaza, who are today still suffering the negative effects of an Israeli-imposed siege.
The march received an overwhelmingly positive reaction from passers-by as the demonstrators picketed stores such as Tescos, Dunnes Stores and Marks and Spencer. As the world boycott of South African goods in the 1980s shows us, citizens across the world can make a real difference by refusing to buy the products of a given state.
éirígí urges everybody to be conscious of the products that they buy in supermarkets such as the large grocery retailers and stores such as Woody’s. Products to look out for are fresh herbs, vegetables such as peppers and new potatoes and fruits such as oranges and grapefruits. éirígí in Cork and across the country will continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine.
