05/05/10 On Saturday [May 1], up to a dozen members of éirígí took part in an anti-NAMA protest in Baile Formaid [Ballyfermot], which had been called by the Dublin south-central ciorcal. The protest, which began at 12pm, lasted well over an hour, despite miserable weather conditions throughout.
Protesters held a number of placards on the demo, including wanted posters of Brian Lenihan, Brian Cowen and Bertie Ahern, proclaiming them guilty of economic treason. The posters, as well as large copies of the satirical Proclamation of the NAMA Republic and Jail the Bankers placards, attracted a lot of support from pedestrians, who shouted encouragement, and a steady beeping of car horns from passing motorists. The protest, as usual, attracted the attention of two car loads of the Special Branch political police, who, although they photographed protesters, were ignored by all.
Speaking at the protest, éirígí activist councillor Louise Minihan said: “Today’s protest is about giving local communities the opportunity to show their opposition to the failed policies of the business class and the Dublin government. “It is clear from the actions of the Fianna Fáil-led government that there will be no bail out for working people. When we loose our jobs and our homes, Fianna Fáil and the Greens don't come running to the rescue. People need to send a clear message to the bankers, developers and politicians that we will not take this lying down.”
Minihan continued: “éirígí is encouraging people across Ireland to start a campaign of civil disobedience against NAMA, the bank bail out and the cutbacks. “What is needed is a new rising to finish the work that began in 1916. éirígí will continue to organise resistance and help organise people to take economic and political power out of the hands of the golden circle and put it into the hands of working class communities.” If you are interested in joining or helping éirígí in Dublin, or anywhere in Ireland, please:
