2007 was a busy year for éirígí activists on a number of different fronts. As the party expanded so too did éirígí’s capacity to effectively campaign on a broad range of issues.
The long-running campaign against the war in Iraq also continued into 2007 with éirígí activists again in the frontline, most notably when three party members were arrested outside of Stormont while protesting against the presence there of the war criminal Tony Blair. The three were later charged with a series of offences with their trial due to take place in early 2008.
Other highlights of the year were a number of commemorative events that éirígí participated in, or directly organised, with the first being the 35th Bloody Sunday anniversary march in Derry in January, which was attended by more than two dozen éirígí activists. The month of May saw éirígí’s second annual James Connolly commemoration addressed by the veteran civil rights campaigner Bernadette McAliskey. Finally in September the 90th anniversary of Thomas Ashe’s death was marked with a commemorative event addressed by the 1981 hunger-striker Bernard Fox. In addition to the activities above there were a number of perhaps visually less impressive, but no less important, events. Chief amongst these was the decision of the éirígi membership to move the organisation from a campaigns group into a formal political party. This decision was taken at éirígí’s first Ard Fhéis in May. Activists also distributed more then a hundred thousand separate pieces of éirígí literature to households across the country during the last twelve months. Below is a selection of images from the year that was 2007. |
