Local Elections 2011 |
This May, for the first time in too long, the people of West Belfast will have the opportunity to endorse the politics of socialist republicanism at the ballot box. Standing Pádraic Mac Coitir and John McCusker in the Six County local government elections is éirígí’s first intervention in electoral politics, a decision that was taken at the party’s Ard-Fheis in January (éirígí Ard-Fheis Decides on Electoral Intervention). This intervention is part of the fightback against the vicious cuts to public services which are being implemented by the Stormont administration, a fightback that must also take place on the streets, in the workplace and in our communities. On May 5, demonstrate your disgust at the cuts and show your support for the socialist republican alternative. Vótáil éirígí uimhir a 1. |
Pádraic Mac Coitir |
Joining the republican struggle in 1970, Pádraic has been imprisoned on four separate occasions for his republican activities, spending a total of 15 years in captivity. Between July 1976 and 1979, he took part in the blank and no-wash protests for political status in the H-Blocks of Long Kesh. Since being released from prison in 1996, Pádraic has been heavily involved in socialist republican and community politics, including working with the large political ex-prisoner population in West Belfast. He is an active trade unionist, a former chairperson of the National Graves Association, an Irish language enthusiast and a keen follower of Gaelic sports. Pádraic is also a founding member of the Turais political tour-guide company that aims to give visitors to West Belfast an accurate account of the conflict. |
John McCusker |
Active in socialist republican politics from the age of 16, John has been involved in many campaigns aimed at defending and securing the rights of the people of West Belfast and further afield. These have included campaigns for adequate social housing, the rights of Irish language speakers and the rights of political prisoners and against sectarian marches and repressive legislation. John is a founding member of the Stop the Sell-Off campaign, which successfully prevented the auctioning of public land on the Andersonstown barracks site. John has also been heavily involved in international solidarity work, most particularly in support of the Palestinian people. A member of the GAA locally and an active trade unionist, John currently works in the public sector. |
