Venezuela

Hugo ChavezIn 1998, the people of Venezuela elected a new government under the presidency of the socialist Hugo Chavez. In 1999 a new constitution was adopted and since then the ‘Bolivarian Revolution’ has taken shape. Despite a US-sponsored coup attempt in April 2002 the revolution has gone from strength to strength. The Chavez government has succeeded in nationalising many major companies and has encouraged the creation of co-operatives and promoted worker-controlled factories.

Venezuela is now a major thorn in the side of US imperialism in Latin America. Chavez was central to the foundation of ALBA (The Bolivarian Alternative for the People of Our America) in 2004, an organisation for the cooperation and integration of Latin American countries and for a just alternative to the US-led Free Trade Agreement of the Americas.

The Venezuelan people have much to contend with in their efforts to build a society based on true social justice and equality. For this reason the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela deserves the support of democrats and socialists around the world.
